OUR HISTORY

SMALL BEGINNINGS

BIG FUTURE

What started with one paint truck in a farm house in Rosebush, Michigan has grown into 6 regional offices throughout Michigan that collectively dispatches over 300 men and women with a fleet in excess of 200 pieces of pavement marking equipment each and every day. From Benton Harbor to Sault Ste. Marie, from Monroe to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and everywhere in between. It’s why we are known as the leading name in our industry.

1970’s

In 1975 Jim Shea started the Shea Company and with the arrival of the first paint striper on March 1, 1976 a new pavement marking company entered the market. The family business specialized in painting pavement markings in cities and counties throughout Michigan.  What was understood right away was that to be a leader, innovation was necessary.  After the first year the new striper was torn apart and rebuilt in house to improve capacity and production.

1980’s

In 1980 the company name was changed to P.K. Contracting, Inc. and the company moved its base of operation to Southeast Michigan.  While P.K. still painted city and county roads, the emphasis was shifted to the construction work zone and servicing Michigan’s road building industry. P.K was the first pavement marking contractor in Michigan to be involved in shifting traffic patterns along roadways under active construction and has been the leader in developing equipment and techniques to allow for the efficient and safe movement of traffic through work zones ever since.

1990’s

To more efficiently serve its’ customers, P.K. opened offices in Kalamazoo and Alma in the early 90’s. The 1990’s was also a decade of advancing technology in the area of pavement marking removal and long life durable pavement markings. Both developments were driven by the need for improved safety for the workers and motorists.

2000’s

In the 2000’s P.K. continued expanding by opening an office in Lake City in the Northern Lower Peninsula.  The 2000’s saw the continued development of durable markings with the introduction of recessed markings and wet reflective pavement markings. These developments improved safety on Michigan’s open roadways and in construction work zones.

2010’s

Expansion continued with the opening of an office in Marquette in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  P.K. also started a business in Southwest Florida under the name of McShea contracting.  McShea now has offices in the Fort Myers, Tampa and Orlando areas. Finally, PK ended the decade with beginning the construction of a facility located in Oxford, Michigan.  Material and equipment advancements have continued with the addition of Polymerized Cement pavement markings and improved removable tape to allow for traffic shifts and roadway openings to be accomplished much faster and safer.
